Every time I come to NYC it's tradition for my family to see a play in Broadway. Since I was young I enjoyed sitting down and watching from Tarzan, Wicked, Mary Poppins to The Phantom of the Opera and "Mamma Mia". Today's choice was a little different. I got the opportunity to enjoy the two hour function of the popular novel by John Steinback titled : "Of Mice and Men".
When I was in ninth grade, I got the opportunity to read and analyse the novel and understand the storyline.
Today after watching the show I realised the real profundity of the novel and the message it carries.
When I read the book I thought of Lenny as crazy and I thought that his death in the end was well deserved.
Today as I saw the play, I suddenly felt empathy towards him. There is no doubt that Lenny indeed has a serious condition, and his child like mind is too innocent for his brutal strength but we can agree that his actions do not derive from evilness.
The story line gives a perception that there is a train of thought that whenever a intimate bond is formed, it has to end. We see this in many cases, for example every time Lenny bonds with an animal he ends up killing it unintentionally. We see it with Candy and his old dog, with Curly and his wife. Curly sees her dead but doesn't feel entirely connected and leaves her on the floor and carries on. We finally see it in the end, when George kills Lenny.
This made me realise how isolated these men were from each other even though they shared a room, and slept on bunk beds. All they wanted was someone to listen to them. We see this when Crooks says: "I't don't matter who the man is as long as his with you". This idea is later reinforced when Lenny is having a conversation with Curlys wife and they are both talking about their own life, and their conversation makes no sense but for them it's alright as long as they know the other one is there listening.
I really enjoyed the play and I am looking forward to re read the novel. I believe that every time I read it or see it, I will find new hidden messages.
I truly recommend the play, the performances were incredibly and I do admit I ended the function with tears in my eyes.
