On Friday I was invited to present in an annual presentation for the "”Defensoría del Pueblo"”. I had to present the idea of the project that I had started since I was in fifth grade to a group of significant people who fight for the environment in Lima, students and little kids. I really enjoy giving out presentations, and giving people the idea that if a little girl is capable of following an idea because of her motivation, anyone else has the capability of doing it.
When I got to the presentation, I was surprised that I learned about something that i didn't expect to learn in a conference for the environment.
After having to wait over 2:30 of different speakers talking I was on the border of falling a sleep and wanting to disappear. I had met each and every one of the persons presenting before hand and I was intrigued with what they were doing to help Peru have a culture of wanting to take care of the environment, nevertheless they made their own presentations so boring.
Why
Because they would stand up, in front of a room with a powerpoint with 100 slides and just kept on reading word to word what the slide said. It kind of reminded me of some of my IB classes.
At the beginning I thought that maybe, I was the only one who felt this way because I was used to an alternative way of learning but as I looked around it seemed as everybody was either fast a sleep or looking down at their phones. From the little kids, to respectful figures, they were board.
So I decided to do a little experiment. I was the LAST presentation, and I really do not get nervous or worried before giving one of my speeches. But this time it was different I felt as if I had something to prove and I really wanted these kids, and people to take away something valuable from the conference.
So I decided that I wasn't going to use nor the podium nor my ppt and instead I just talked. I grabbed the microphone and walked around. I examined each and every facial expression. By asking questions and getting the audience involved, everything changed.
I only talked for 10 minutes, which I thought was more than enough to prove a point.
I think my idea worked..
Just by changing my mood, and acknowledging the audience, making them realize I kept them interested. If they are interested they pay attention, and if they pay attention they learn.
Now, I can understand why I feel like I learn much better in a class environment like the IA rather than my regular classes.
